Travel to Tenerife
Tenerife, known for its spectacular views of mountains and steep gorges, is one of the largest of the group of Spanish islands that form the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife.
Transportation to Tenerife
Tenerife has two airports: Los Rodeos in the north, which mainly deals with domestic flights, and Reina Sofia Airport in the south. Many international flights land at Reina Sofia Airport, which is well connected to the city by taxis and buses. There are also bus and taxi services connecting the two airports. Car ferry services are available for those who wish to drive to Tenerife, but there are no bus routes from the mainland to Tenerife. However, Tenerifeitself has a good bus service connecting resorts and towns.
What to see
Teide National Park is where Teide Volcano is located. The climb to the top is quite steep and the air at the summit is thin and cold. Animal lovers will not want to miss visiting Loro Parque, near Puerto de la Cruz, where there are more than 300 parrots, lions, chimpanzees and other animals. Regular sea lion and dolphin shows are also held at the park.The Octopus Water Theme park near Playa Las Americas, has dolphin shows and marine exhibitions. The theme park features water slides, pools and tube rides for all ages. From Las Vistas or Puerto Colon, join a two-hour tour in a glass bottomed boat.It is not uncommon to see dolphins and many other sea animals on the trip. A trip to the museum, housed in a 16th century building, will provide some information on the history of Tenerife.
Day trips
Santa Cruz is a good base for visit the neighbouring areas including Masca and the imposing cliffs at Los Gigantes. Masca is a quaint village that was onceinaccessible by road and has therefore retained much of its Moorish charm. The Black Pyramids in Guimar are also a popular tourist attraction. The park covers 60,000 square metres and it is easy to spend a day here enjoying nature and walking alongthe several trails.
Activities and leisure
Tenerife is a shoppers paradise as it is partly tax free; cosmetics, liquor, cigarettes and perfumes are usually cheaper here. Many shops sell souvenirs and branded items, easily found at both Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz.
There are many walking and hiking routes to suit a variety of ages at the parks around Tenerife. Golfing enthusiasts will love the 27-hole Costa Adeje golf course, just five kilometres from Playa de las Americas. Water sport activitiessuch asparagliding and jet-skiing are found at almost all of its beaches.
Safety issues
Like every other bustling tourist destination, petty crime happens on Tenerife too. There are the usual pick-pockets and snatch thieves who are quick to spot tourists. Be alert and keep an eye on your belongings. It is advisable to take out travel insurance, especially if you are planning to participate in the more adventurous activities available in Tenerife.
