Along with Jerusalem and Rome, Santiago is one of the three holiest sites for Christianity and the final stop in the Way of St James pilgrimage route. As such, the city has been hosting hordes of visitors for over a millennium, and even boasts the oldest hotel in the world. Modern day Santiago has a wealth of hotels, many of which only open during Christian holiday periods and important religious festivals to help meet the extraordinary demand for rooms. Summer is also a very popular time to visit the city, so most lodgings are open from the end of May through to the beginning of September. 

Almost everyone who visits wants to stay in the heart of the medieval city, with the star rating of hotels steadily decreasing as you radiate outward from the central city square.
