Santiago De Compostela Health And Safety

Visitors participating in any popular festivities in the city will be in the midst of large crowds and possibly the target of pick-pockets and bag snatchers. Leave any non-essential items in your hotel safe and keep a tight hold on your belongings.

Safety

A place of pilgrimage, Santiago is free of most violent crime; however, there are plenty of pickpockets and other opportunistic thieves around the town, particularly during popular religious festivals when the citys streets are filled with crowds. You should exercise due caution when in public places, keeping a watchful eye on your belongings at all times.

Health

Santiago has no particular health concerns, but there is a slight risk of food contamination, particularly when flocks of visitors descend upon the city creating a huge demand on eateries. In general, however, the city is very proud of its sanitation and the chances of becoming sick are minimal. The weather conditions outside the summer months are damp and cool, so be sure to take warm clothing to avoid coming down with a cold or the flu. To be on the safe side, visitors can opt for a hepatitis A vaccination and drink only bottled water, and those travelling to the city in winter should think about getting a flu shot.

Travel insurance

While the chances of becoming sick or getting injured are considered unlikely in a town like Santiago, you never know what might happen, particularly when in the middle of large crowds of milling people. Also, there is a small risk of accidents when exploring the small towns and coastal villages in Galicia, or participating in outdoor recreation. For peace of mind, travel insurance can be a great comfort.
