Things To Do In Palma

Most people associate Majorca with beaches and nightlife, and while it certainly excels in this department, Palma also has some outstanding historical and cultural attractions. There are ancient palaces and castles here, grand cathedrals and monuments, renowned museums and galleries as well as attractions for the whole family to enjoy. Palma also boasts a pretty waterfront with a lengthy promenade and a fascinating marina.

Banys Arabs

The Banys Arabs 10th century Moorish baths are nestled amid the narrow streets of the medieval quarter (Barri Gòtic), which is located to the east of the cathedral. The baths are unique in that they are the best example of Moorish-constructed buildings in Palma. The buildings also feature airy courtyards and magnificent columns.

Castell de Bellver

For the perfect overall view of Palma, the early 14th century Castell de Bellver, one-time summer palace of the kings of Majorca, overlooks the town and also boasts a museum. The well-preserved castle was originally built as a fortress, complete with a double moat, and was aptly named ‘Bellver’, which literally means beautiful view. The Municipal Museum is the other attraction of the castle; an interesting museum featuring a fascinating collection of old coins and archaeological objects.

Catedral (La Seu)

With construction having started in the 13th century, La Seu took over 300 years to build and was only finished in the early 17th century. The cathedral is located in the Old Town, overlooking the sea, and features a 150-foot high central vault and 65-foot high columns. Gaudi also made a contribution to the look of the Gothic edifice with his wrought-iron canopy over the main altar.

Llotja

The Llotja exchange is one of the finest Gothic structures in Palma, dating from the 15th century. It remains a testament to the heady trading days of Majorca, when rich merchants carried out their business and made Majorca a profitable island. Today, the Llotja holds regular exhibitions and concerts.

Marineland

Although located outside of Palma, Marineland is ideal for children, with its many attractions and amusements including dolphin and sealion shows. Marineland is located about 10 miles outside of Palma, on the way to the beach resort of Palma Nova. The dolphin show runs daily in the early afternoon, while a small zoo, a children’s playground and a picnic area provide alternative entertainment.

Palau de l'Almudaina

From Muslim fortress to royal residence to museum, Palau de l'Almudaina was built by the early Moors as a stronghold. The palace is located opposite the cathedral and features lovely Moorish-style gardens and fountains and an array of fascinating exhibits that include antiques and artwork. Views of the harbour from the palace are outstanding.

Seafront and Beaches

Many visitors to Palma come for the beaches and although there is only a small beach near the city of Palma, there are several quality beach resorts nearby including those of Playa de Palma and upmarket Illetes and Puerto Portal. Palma also boasts a striking harbour-front and promenade, where visitors can stroll past the water’s edge and marvel at the elaborate yachts moored at the marina.

Museums

The Majorca Museum is Majorca's most important museum. It is housed in the 17th Palau de l'Almudaina, which is located near the Gothic cathedral, La Seu. The museum has some important archaeological collections including prehistoric and Moorish remains and many renowned paintings. The Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu d’Art Espanyol Contemporani) is situated in central Palma in an 18th century building and contains numerous quality masterpieces.

There are works here by the likes of Dalí, Miró and Picasso as well as dozens of other notable greats. Es Baluard Contemporary Art Museum (Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma) is a fairly recent addition to the Palma art scene and contains notable works by Picasso and Cezanne among others. The museum is located near the castle and also boasts fantastic views of the harbour.
