Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands and is not as large or as busy as its neighbour Mallorca, just 34kms away. It is said that Menorca is the ideal destination for a peaceful holiday as it has many beaches, quaint fishing villages, pine woods and fields.
Transportation to Menorca
The best way to get to Menorca is to fly, with the island handling flights from the UK, Germany and the Spanish mainland. The international airport is situated very close to Mao, Menorcas capital, and is well equipped with modern facilities. To get to the city, you can hire a car at one of the car hire outlets at the airport or take a taxi. There are bus services from the airport to the city, but these are limited. It is possible to get to Menorca by ferry, with several ferry companies offering daily trips. Several ferry companies carry passengers as well as vehicles. Once in Menorca, there are several convenient modes of transport including taxis, buses and scooters.

What to see
There is plenty to seein Menorca, beginning with a tour of the harbour, where you will pass several old British buildings, the old customs house and Golden Farm, where Admiral Nelson once stayed. Menorcas waterfront is very interesting, as it has houses built into the cliffs, caves and several quaint shops and cafs. Es Freginal Park is in the middle of Mao and is a refuge to those seeking time with nature. There are many benches to relax on and a beautiful display of flowers and manicured gardens to appreciate.
The 18th century Xoriguer Distellery is a popular site to visit and visitors can learn how the famous Menorcan gin is made and enjoy sampling the many liqueurs. Placa Alfons III lies just outside the Old Town and has several cafs and restaurants. The Tourist Information Office is located in an old windmill in the square. The Museum de Menorca is located among the ruins of an old monastery and exhibits artefacts from prehistoric times. Menorca has several beaches that are ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
Day trips
An exciting day-trip would be to travel to Ibiza, with its many nightclubs and stunning beaches. While at Ibiza, take the time to visit the salt lakes, olive groves, pine forests and the several ancient historical sites that the island has to offer.
Activities and leisure
Like many other Spanish islands, Menorca offers several water activities, from sailing, windsurfing and paragliding to jet-skiing, diving and snorkeling as well as fishing and many other activities. Hiking is fast becoming a popular activity and the mountainous regions of Menorca have many trails that are suitable for all ages. Several of the trails lead through nature reserves and offer spectacular views. There are many spectacular golf courses in Menorca which provide excellent facilities. Cycling is a popular activity with tourists and there are many outlets that hire bicycles and scooters.
Menorca is a shoppers paradise with its many trendy stores, malls and markets. Visitors can find a wide variety of things here, from spices, leather and sliver goods, Menorcan wines and Menorcangin. The island has many elegant restaurants, sidewalk cafs, nightclubs and bars where visitors can dance the night away.
Safety issues
It is safe in Menorca, but tourists should be careful of pick-pocketing and bag snatching. Do not leave luggage unattended and always be alert to your surroundings and possible dangers. It is recommended that all tourists have travel insurance for peace of mind.
