Be Safe In Mallorca

Mallorca is by and large a safe place for visitors, with low crime rates and a non-intimidating atmosphere. Violent crime is rare and the main concern for tourists are the pickpockets that operate in the busy tourist areas.

Safety

Pickpockets on the island are smart and good at what they do, so visitors should never underestimate their abilities and provide them with any possible advantage to relieve you of your cash or valuables. Pickpockets assemble around popular areas such as Palma Cathedral, the Arab Baths and Mallorca Museum, and are invariably gypsies who will attempt to sell you flowers. Don’t, under any circumstances, take out your wallet and make sure you keep it in your front pocket at all times. Alternatively, wear a money belt hidden under your clothes. If you are still suspicious, keep a hand on your money at all times while you are in the presence of these characters. Buses are also common places for pickpockets to try their light- fingered skills and visitors cramming onto vehicles at peak times are prime targets. Be extra careful at all times, but especially when alighting from buses, as this is the time when most robberies occur.

Health

Tap water is generally safe to drink although not necessarily pleasant, as it contains large volumes of chlorine. Mineral water is a cheap and considerably more palatable option and is available both in both carbonated (con gaz) and still (sin gaz) forms. The risk of communicable disease is low and certainly no higher than in other well developed EU countries. EU visitors falling ill or sustaining injuries that require medical treatment can take advantage of reciprocal agreements with their own countries, provided they have the relevant documentation. For visitors from other countries, insurance with healthcare cover is an absolute must. It’s also worth noting that many drugs that are dispensed by prescription only in other countries, are available over the counter in Spain.
