Mallorca Transport
A hire car is the most convenient way to get around the island of Mallorca and gives you the freedom to travel at your leisure; however, if you prefer to rely on public services, then you’ll find a number of options to choose from. Trains provide some limited coverage of the island, while buses are perhaps the most economical and widespread form of transport. A tourist bus service covers the city of Palma, while taxis are available across the island.
By train
Mallorca operates two train routes, both of which commence at Palma's Placa d'Espanya. The first route runs through the mountains of Sierra de Tramuntana before concluding at the town of Soller and is mainly used for sightseeing purposes, as opposed to providing connections between the island’s significant destinations. The second route, operated by Transport de les Illes Balears, travels north to Inca, calling at the villages of Marratxí, Santa Maria del Camí, Consell, Binissalem and Lloseta en route. From Inca, onward connections are available to Sa Pobla and Manacor.

By bus
Buses provide the cheapest means of getting around the island and various bus companies operate services between Palma and the rest of Mallorca, with many of the smaller villages also covered. Within the Palma area, services are provided by Empresa Municipal de Transports Urbans de Palma de Mallorca, while Transport de les Illes Balears run additional services beyond into the villages. The Palma de Mallorca bus station is the main terminus for all services.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available in all of the island’s popular resorts and can be hired by hailing them in the street or by telephone. In Palma, taxis are metered, but they also levy supplements for specific destinations such as the airport and for considerations such as extra passengers and luggage. If you are staying at a reputable hotel, the chances are they will have an arrangement with a local company, so you should consider contacting them if you are looking for a reliable service.
Tourist services
A sightseeing bus operates around Palma de Mallorca and is an ideal way for visitors to get around the city. Pay once on the first leg of your journey, then subsequent journeys are free for up to 24 hours. The bus completes its entire circuit in 80 minutes and runs every 20 minutes. Destinations covered include Bellver Castle, Pueblo Español and stops along the Paseo Maritimo.
From the airport
Unless you are being collected by hotel shuttle from Palma de Mallorca International Airport, you must choose between frequent and reliable public bus services or comfortable and convenient taxis for your onward journey. Alternatively, consider taking a hire car and making your own way to your accommodation.
