What to see
La Manquita, Malagas imposing cathedral, has an interior that has been influenced by the Renaissance and Baroque periods. There are many other ancient sites to visit including the 15th century church of Iglesia del Sagrano; the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Public Foundation Museum, which is located in the house in which the artist himself was born, in 1895; and the La Alcazaba, the 11th century military fortress built by the Moors. The 3rd century Roman Theatre lies just underneath the fortress.
Day trips
There are several day trips in which to explore Malaga and its surrounding areas. The Nerja caves date back to prehistoric times and are definitely worth a visit. Make sure you stop at the Balcony of Europe, which offers stunning views of the city and the sea.
Activities and leisure
Malaga offers many water sports, from jet-skiing to paragliding. Fishing trips can be arranged at hotels or through local tour operators. There is also mountain biking and hiking available not too far away from the town. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafs at which you can dance the night away or just have a quiet dinner.
Safety issues
It is always advisable to take out travel insurance when visiting new destinations. The language barrier can cause you to miss trains and buses. Additionally, if you are going to participate in the more adventurous water sports on offer, it would be advisable to get some insurance. As with any destination, Malaga has its share of pickpockets and snatch thieves. It is always wise to be alert to your surroundings and take care of your belongings.
