Malaga Restaurants

Eating out in Malaga is a joy and there are some delightful eateries along the coast and in the town centre, where traditional Spanish fare and delicious seafood dishes and specialities can be sampled. Restaurants to take special note of are Rojo, a stylish and modern city centre establishment specialising in French/European-style cuisine; Gallega on Fernán Núñez 2, more of a local haunt but with no menu; while Restaurante Gallego Candamil, near the train station, is another local favourite with delicious tapas at excellent prices. Asian, vegetarian and avant-garde restaurants are also in abundance in Malaga.

Local cuisine

Specialities are aplenty in Malaga and usually revolve around seafood. Espetos are perhaps the most well known local speciality - delicious fire-grilled sardines on a stick. Coquinas are another must-try - shellfish cooked with white wine; while anything from anchovies to squid is available. Visitors to Malaga should not miss out on the famous, sweet Malaga wine which can be sampled in many of the popular city centre pubs and restaurants.

Where to eat

The city centre and historic quarter are perhaps the best places in Malaga to source out a suitable restaurant, while the aptly named chiringuitos (restaurants on the beach) are scattered along the coast and are a Malaga institution. You will find dozens of restaurants here serving anything and everything from the ubiquitous seafood specialities to paella washed down with a jug of sangria. If you are feeling brave, throw yourself in at the deep end and try Malaga’s famed el Tintero chiringuito, where menus are forbidden and waiters mingle among the tables bearing a range of dishes.
