Lanzarote Transport

Public transport on the island is adequate, with buses and taxis in abundance. Local buses are the cheapest option for getting around, while taxis make a convenient alternative for those who don’t want to rent a car.

By bus

The local buses are known as guaguas (pronounced ‘wah-wahs’) and provide the cheapest means of getting around the island. All major tourist destinations are covered as well as most of the island’s villages, with frequent services throughout the day. For visitors planning on making multiple journeys, a bus pass, which can be purchased from Arrecife Bus Station, provides a discount of 50 per cent off the regular travel fare. A circular service also operates, with three different routes available: Titerroy, Argana Alta and Arrecife.

Taxis

Taxis can be found across the island and are available by hailing them from the roadside or by telephone reservation. Fares are not especially expensive although passengers are expected to tip drivers, usually by rounding up to the nearest Euro. Be wary of paying for fares with large bills, as taxi drivers often claim not to carry change and you may end up giving a much larger tip than you intended.

From the airport

Many visitors are provided with free shuttle pick-ups from the hotel at which they are staying, eliminating the need to worry about ground transportation options. For others however, options include a public bus service to Arrecife and other major destinations, taxis and car hire.
