Lanzarote Restaurants
Lanzarote caters for its visiting population with an ample supply of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. While there are plenty of venues where local and Spanish cuisine can be found, there are also a large number of restaurants with international themes such as Irish pubs, fish and chip venues and German eateries.
Local cuisine
The local cuisine takes influences from traditional Spanish recipes and combines them with influences from Latin America and Africa. Fish features prominently in local dishes, with specialities such as sancocho, a stew made from bream or stone bass, and vieja, a dish of parrotfish cooked in oil and vinegar being among the favourites. Other fish meals take locally caught sea bass, swordfish or tuna and serve them with a green sauce made of coriander or parsley, known as mojo verde, along with overboiled potatoes, known as papas arrugada. Tapas, which are small dishes of meat, fish or vegetables, are also popular on Lanzarote and are regularly consumed prior to the main meal along with a glass of beer or wine. Meat is also a popular part of local dishes, but it is rarely reared locally and most dishes are based on cuts imported from South America. Rabbit is reared on the island and is often served grilled, roasted or in a stew.

Where to eat
If it’s authentic Lanzarote cuisine that you are looking for, then you’re best avoiding the highly popular tourist establishments, where food is inevitably adjusted to suit foreign taste buds. Puerto del Carmen however is home to some reputable restaurants where the food is typically Canarain. For true traditional food, try wandering off the beaten track a little and searching out venues where there are more locals than tourists.
