Be Safe in La Gomera

La Gomera is considered very safe for tourists as it is neither crowded nor the most visited island in the Canaries. Locals are friendly and very helpful. However, you should still remain careful during your stay and while you are out hiking. Many trees along the trails have sharp thorns and some can be poisonous.

Safety

Unlike other bustling islands, La Gomera is much quieter and very low-key. It is almost crime-free and pick-pocketing is not a common problem here. However, you still have to take good care of your belongings and you should not take any valuable things with you when you go up the mountains or laze around on the beaches. Swimming at some beaches is prohibited, as the waves can be too strong and dangerous.

Health

There have been no reports of health concerns on La Gomera, but if you plan to go hiking, come prepared with long-sleeved shirts and trousers, as some trees have very sharp leaves and thorns. There are also snakes and other venomous insects in the forests.

Seafood dishes are usually very fresh and well-cooked, and should cause you no problems. Carrying a bottle of water with you is a good idea, as drinking public water can cause diarrhoea.

Travel insurance

Even though the island is quite safe, you still have to take care of yourself and your belongings. Do not leave valuable belongings on the beaches, even if they are deserted. Walking into the jungle can be risky if you are going on your own. Its better to hike in a group so that you can look after each other. Swimming, snorkelling and diving can also put you at risk. Taking out travel insurance is the best way to ensure that all your costs will be covered in cases of emergency.
