Getting to La Gomera
As an island, La Gomera can be visited by sea and by air. Tourists can arrive at one of the two airports on Tenerife: Tenerife South or Tenerife North. From Tenerife South, you can take a ferry to La Gomera, while Tenerife North provides flights to a small airport on the island.
By air
La Gomera now has an airport at Playa Santiago which offers daily flights to and from Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Its the only airport on the island and it only serves planes from Tenerife North. The journey takes about 35 minutes from Tenerife North and about 45 minutes from Gran Canaria.
Tenerife North Airport, or Los Rodeos Airport, is not very well-known among tourists. However, the airport is well-equipped with many shops, restaurants, bars and other facilities for passengers. Most of the flights offered at Tenerife North are inter-island flights between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, La Palma, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, El Hierro and La Gomera. Other flights operate to major cities in Spain.
Non-Spanish visitors arriving at Tenerife South Airport, also known as Reina Sofia Airport, which is newer and much bigger, can transfer to La Gomera by ferry The airport boasts a full range of facilities including a post office, pharmacy, police station, business centre and many restaurants, shops, bars and a florist.
By ferry
Most tourists travel from Tenerife to La Gomera by ferry. If you arrive at Tenerife South Airport, the only way to get to the island is by ferry. The port of Los Cristianos is 12kms from Tenerife South Airport and operates ferries to San Sebastian on La Gomera. There are three companies which operate the services: Fred Olsen, Naviera Armas and Garajonay Express. The crossing takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour.
By bus
To travel around on the island, you can hop on any of the public buses provided. There are seven bus lines that will take you to major tourist spots including San Sebastian, Valle Gran Rey, Hermigua, Playa Santiago and the airport. Buses run everyday, but services are less frequent at weekends and on bank holidays.
