La Gomera Entertainment
Those expecting to party all night long should head to Tenerife, the more crowded and urban neighbouring island. But, those who want to explore the nature; walk into lush, green forests; taste fresh seafood cooked in a special local style; and watch the sun set into the sea in all its glory - La Gomera is the place for you. With an impressive underwater world, La Gomera also welcomes divers from all over the world to come and witness the magnificent corals and the variety of fish.
Eating out
There are not many restaurants on the island and those that do exist tend to serve local Canarian food. Tapas bars can be found scattered around La Gomera. Fresh fish restaurants are aplenty at Playa de Santiago, with most dishes on the menus being delicious and unbeatably fresh. You can also find some restaurants in the middle of the forests or in the national park.
A number of eateries here enjoy a location on the hill or near the cliff, providing stunning scenery. Seafood lovers should stop at the seafood places in Hermigua, which serve scrumptious dishes cooked Canarian style.
Local cuisine
Canarian cooking has a unique character and features traditional farm produce and meats. Pork can be seen in most of the main dishes and is prepared in many styles. Gofio, a traditional food, is made from ground and toasted maize or wheat. It is highly nutritious and is eaten as a dough mix along with various foods. Cheese lovers will also be happy, as there are many excellent, award-winning cheeses offered here.
Notable and popular local dishes include sancocho, a traditional fish stew made from salted sea bream; stone bass; roasted pigs knuckles; and potato stew, also known as papas arrugadas. Fresh fish cooked Canarian style then dipped into spicy, garlic-flavoured Mojo sauce is also very mouth-watering.
Snorkelling and diving
For snorkelling and diving opportunities, head to the beach of Playa de Santiago, where the water is clear and inviting. For those who want to learn how to dive, Gomera Dive Resort offers classes at the Club Laurel restaurant and pool, and within the bay. When you are ready, you can dive and see plenty of tropical fish and other fascinating corals living in perfect harmony underwater.
Boat trips
Boat trips allow you to observe the stunning surroundings of the island. If you are lucky, you may even spot dolphins, whales and other cetaceans. You can also stop for a swim in the middle of the ocean, while those into fishing can look for tuna, which is abundant here. Boats can also be hired if you want to organise your own fishing or boating trip.
Walking
La Gomera is heaven for those who love trekking and walking. There are many trails around the island for all levels of walkers. Some of the most famous are the walking trails through the El Cedro forest and the Garajonay National Park. You can explore the thick forests, with countless kinds of plants, and witness spectacular views from high vantage points.
Mountain biking
There are many challenging routes where you can practice your hiking skills including many hilly areas. You can also stop and look at the views of the island or make a bee-line for small villages in the mountains. If you dont want to hike up the steep slopes, there are bike hire companies that will take you to the top, from where you can cycle your way down.
