Gran Canaria Leisure

Gran Canaria’s year-round good weather makes it the ideal destination for sports of every kind. Indeed the warm winter temperatures are the main reason that the island has attracted many European sports clubs, who use it as a winter training centre to get their elite athletes into shape ahead of the major sports seasons. The island also hosts a number of significant regional, national and international sporting events throughout the year. Spectator sports are popular on Gran Canaria and are well entrenched in local culture, with football, basketball and motor racing listed among the most popular. Local sports originating from the island such as lateen sailing and Canarian wrestling also make for interesting watching.

Golf

If you want to get involved in something active while you’re holidaying on Gran Canaria, then you have plenty of choices. Golf is highly popular, with a total of six fantastic courses set amid fantastic tropical scenery, while down at the beach, there are opportunities for sailing, surfing, windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling. Elsewhere, there are specialist sports such as mountain biking, rock climbing, gliding and paragliding available, all of which can be booked as day tours from hotels or agents in the popular resorts. Many of the reputable hotels and apartment complexes have gymnasiums and tennis courts, which are free to residents or available at a charge to other visitors.
