Transportation to Fuerteventura
The airport is located in Puerto Rosario and receives mainly charter flights from Europe as well as some domestic flights. The most convenient way to get to the city is to hire a car from the airport or to get a bus. Taxis are available at the airport, but they are expensive. There are no buses from the mainland to Fuerteventura although the island itself has a good bus system. There are passenger ferry services that connect Fuerteventura to the other Canary Islands. It is not possible to drive or take a train to the island.
What to see
Fuerteventura offers tourists plenty to see in the nearby villages, which are filled with ancient churches and castles. Several museums are scattered around the island, showcasing the rich history of the Canary Islands. There are craft markets with traders weaving baskets and making items from wood and clay. However, Fuerteventura is mostly noted for its remarkable beaches with clear seawater and fine sand, ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
Daytrips
Jandia, on the southern tip of Fuerteventura, has some of the best beaches in the world. It is about an hours drive from Puerto Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura. The impressive Ajuy caves are in the west of Fuerteventura and the views from the path leading to the caves are breathtaking.
Activities and leisure
Windsurfing is popular in Fuerteventura and is easily available along with other sportssuch asparagliding, motorised paragliding and jet-skiing. Whale watching has also become a popular pastime and there are several tour companies that arrange half or full-day tours. Walking, triking (three-wheeled 'motorbike-like' vehicles that hold three people) and cycling tours are easily arranged on the island. Many visitors come to Fuerteventura to simply enjoy the beautiful beaches and to sunbathe and swim.
Safety issues
The police do not speak much English at Fuerteventura and it is best to always be alert to your surroundings and belongings. There have been incidents of pick pocketing and the snatching of handbags and cameras. It would be advisable to get travel insurance, especially if you are planning to participate in the more adventurous sports that are available.
