Fuerteventura Transport

Travelling around Fuerteventura is a relatively simple affair. The only options available are to hire a car, rent a taxi or take a bus. The island is only 60 miles long and at its widest just 18 miles. The roads are all kept to a high standard and as they are relatively new, they have not yet experienced a lot of wear and tear. As well as taking advantage of the island’s transport options, it is also very worthwhile walking around the island, as many of the sights are better experienced on foot.

By bus

Buses on the island are managed by the Tiadhe bus company. Travelling by bus is a cheap alternative to travelling by taxi, but always check timetables first. Not all buses run into the night, some finish early evening and many services do not run regularly. There are 16 different bus routes that run across the island and buses are generally very efficient and comfortable. It takes approximately 20 minutes to travel from Caleta de Fuste to Puerto del Rosario and about 40 minutes to get to the capital from Corralejo. Buses are more expensive by the mile on the island than they are on mainland Spain, but as the island is so small the price difference is hardly noticeable. Most drivers speak little or no English, but will try to be as helpful as they can.

By taxi

Taxis cannot be ordered in advance on the island and taxi drivers cannot pick anyone up if it is outside their area. They are relatively cheap and reliable and most drivers a have at least a basic grasp of English. Taxis can be found at the airport, outside Arrivals, and throughout the major towns on the island.

Tourist services

If you are travelling on a package holiday, you will have a free coach transfer to your hotel from the airport, although private transfers are also available for a small fee. It is also possible to be met from the airport by a private driver, who for a fee, will drive you to your hotel. When the very first tourists arrived in Fuerteventura, the trip to the main resort of Corralejo was undertaken on camels and took six hours. For the adventurous and those not in a hurry, you can still travel to the resort of Caleta de Fuste on the back of a camel.

From the airport

Train services are not available on Fuerteventura. The quickest and most convenient way to travel from the airport is either to hire a car and drive along the well- maintained roads, use airport taxis or hop on one of the local airport buses. The taxi rank can be found outside of Arrivals, where a price guide is available for journeys to all local destinations. If the driver does not offer a price guide, ask to see one to avoid being ripped off. There are two bus routes travelling from the airport: one to Caleta de Fuste via the capital Puerto del Rosaria and one to Morro Jable, also via the capital as well as other main towns.
