Be Safe In Formentera
Safety
Formentera is considered to be a very safe island. Violent crime is rare although not unheard of. As with every tourist destination, pickpockets and bag snatchers tend to target vulnerable tourists. Always be on your guard and keep hold of your belongings, especially in busy tourist areas. Try to avoid areas that are unknown to you if you are on your own or it’s late at night. Despite the low crime rate, there is still a risk of danger.
Despite these minimal risks, Formentera is safer than many other holiday destinations and the majority of visitors experience no problems.
Health
If you suffer with mosquito bites, you will need to use repellent. There is no malaria on the island, but bites can be very irritating and can get infected once scratched. No vaccinations are required to visit Formentera, although you should always ensure that your tetanus and other standard vaccinations are up-to-date.
If you find yourself needing medical attention, a new hospital has been opened on the island, ensuring quality health care for both locals and tourists. If it is a minor health problem, chemists are located across the island, with at least one in every town that is open throughout the night. Pharmacists are highly trained and can usually speak excellent English.
If police are required during your stay, both Spanish local and national police forces are generally very efficient and helpful with regards to tourist issues. It is vital for insurance purposes to report anything that has been stolen to the police in order to obtain a full report.
