Be Safe In Bilbao

The Basque region is one of the more volatile areas of Spain as passions run high on many issues, from government and cultural identity to local football matches. In addition, as a fairly large city, it has its share of criminal activity.  Therefore caution should be exercised in several areas. One of the more surprising places for crime is the parking lot of the Guggenheim Museum. Since the museum does not run the parking lot, it is not responsible for the frequent thefts that occur. Many visitors stop by the Guggenheim on their way to other parts of the Basque coast and find that their cars have been broken into while they were admiring the museum. Most thefts actually take place in the daytime, so be aware that your unguarded car may be a target if you park there. Unfortunately, the police seem unable to curb this problem or even offer much assistance.

More dangerous areas of Bilbao

In general, Bilbao is a very safe city to walk around, but there are parts to avoid if possible. The most notoriously dangerous areas of Bilbao are the streets of Las Cotes and San Francisco, behind the railway station. They are home to many of the city’s pimps, hookers and drug addicts. During the day it’s not too risky, but try to avoid these areas after dark and never flash your money, jewellery or camera here at any time. 

A more sinister, but usually benign, threat comes from the Basque terrorist group, ETA. You may run into the occasional demonstration or see their posters in the streets. The simmering animosity between the government and ETA makes for an uncomfortable atmosphere, so try and avoid getting into any political conversations.

Should any accidents or medical emergencies arise, don’t worry. Bilbao has world-class hospitals and clinics, and pharmacies are available for minor problems.
