Benidorm Health And Safety
Benidorm is a fairly safe town and resort, yet it suffers from pickpockets and many people die on the roads every year through car accidents and from coming off scooters when not wearing helmets.
Safety
Even though you are on holiday, you should try to remain vigilant when in Benidorm, especially while at the beach and out on the town. Violent crime is not much of a problem; it is more the scourge of petty thieves, particularly pickpockets. Try not to carry large amounts of cash and leave unnecessary credit and cash cards at home or in a hotel safe, along with your passport.
Spanish roads are in good condition, although Spanish drivers can be erratic and impatient at best. Remember that the Spanish drive on the right side of the road, so look the opposite way at crossings. Although there are many zebra crossings in Benidorm, they are rarely heeded by drivers and you should take great care when crossing with children. We recommend you do not hire a moped, but if you must, always wear a helmet and keep off the major highways.
Health
Perhaps the biggest health threat while visiting Benidorm is the sun; wear lots of sun block and always have a bottle of water to hand. Tap water is potable, although the different minerals in the water in Spain, compared to other countries, can cause upset stomachs. There are no other major health concerns in Spain, apart from the obvious threat of AIDS and other STDs, and the hospitals and clinics in the resort are very good. Pharmacies are also widespread and many are open 24 hours.
Travel insurance
All travellers to Benidorm should take out travel insurance with coverage for theft, loss of baggage, accidents and medical emergencies. This is especially crucial if you intend on driving, partaking in water sports or are a citizen of a country outside of the EU. Free healthcare is available to citizens of EU countries in Spain, so long as they are in possession of the relevant documentation.
