Benalmadena is a town and a municipality in the province of Malaga, Spain. Packed with many interesting attractions for everyone in the family, Benalmadena welcomes tourists to its charming beaches, great shopping and dining areas, and dazzling nightlife. There is also a sea life centre and a theme park, perfect for a day out.

Transportation to Benalmadena

Malaga International Airport, located five miles to the southwest of Malaga, is a busy airport with many scheduled international and chartered flights. The airport has a railway station that links to Malaga city centre and Benalmadena. Getting here by plane is the easiest way, but no doubt the most costly one. Alternatively, you can take a high-speed train from Madrid to Malaga, with services running daily. Standard train services also operate from Madrid to Malaga, taking just a few hours.

A cheaper option is to take a long distance bus from Madrid, with the journey taking about 6 to 7 hours. Buses also arrive in Malaga from Barcelona, Crdoba, Seville and Granada. Paseo de los Tilos, Malagas main bus station, is situated in the southwest of the city and provides buses to Benalmadena and other towns throughout the day. If you are travelling by car, there are main routes from Madrid and Barcelona to Malaga. Take the E5, E902, A359 and the E15 if you are coming from Madrid. The E15 (A7) from Barcelona will lead you through Malaga and onto Benalmadena.

What to see

Known as the finest museum in the area, the Archaeological Museum showcases a great collection of Neolithic and pre-Columbian artefacts from around Andalusia. Also visit Castillo de Colomares, situated near the museum, a notable monument to Christopher Columbus, representing his discovery of America. The castle boasts a variety of beautiful architectural styles. Located in exquisite floral surroundings, this place also offers a fantastic view of the sea. The Sea Life Centre is another destination not to be missed. The centre is situated next to the marina and provides a number of tanks and tunnels displaying fascinating underwater creatures.

Daytrips

There are many things to do once you are in Benalmadena. Boasting some of the most remarkable beaches, Benalmadena offers holidaymakers fun and quality time in the sun. Three of Benalmadenas most popular beaches include Torre Bermeja Beach, featuring many water sports activities; Malapesquera Beach, perfect for a promenade; and Arroyo Beach, located at the foot of the popular Arroyo de la Miel village. Alternatively, head to Tivoli World theme park in Arroyo de la Miel, which boasts many beautiful gardens, pretty fountains and inviting walkways. The park features a 3,000-seat theatre, which hosts childrens shows and other events; Andulucia Square, offering free flamenco shows; and the Western Square, providing western and comedy shows.

Activities and leisure

A perfect destination for holidaymakers, there are many activities here suitable for everyone. If you fancy a walk on the beach, head to one of the many beautiful beaches that are easily accessible from the city centre. The Benalmadena Marina, the best equipped marina in the Mediterranean, is also impressive, with its many shops and cafs, while the Puerto Marina features a number of bars and nightclubs. Water sports and other exciting activities are plentiful in this lively town.

Safety issues

Pickpockets are a main concern in Benalmadena. Be alert wherever you go, whether you are at the beach, in the town or at the bus and train stations. It is advisable to take a taxi back to your hotel after a night out if your hotel is not within walking distance. Also, make sure you take out travel insurance for you and your family.
