Alicante is situated on the east coast of Spain, 110 miles south of Valencia. It is an interesting place to visit and has plenty to offer the tourist.There are some beautiful beaches in the region and these are a big attraction to visitingholiday-makers. The town itself has a rich history, and the Moorish influence is still evident today. The Castillo de Santa Barbara, the town's medieval castle, is the focal point of Alicante, but with some interesting museums and a great nightlife there is plenty to occupy your time here.
Transportation to Alicante
Alicante has good transport links, with a modern airport just a short drive outside the city, as well as good rail and road connections. Alicante is a popular tourist destination and El Altet International Airport is served by a number of scheduled and charter airlines from across Europe. The airport is about a 15-minute drive from the city.
The Spanish motorway network is generally good, and roads are well maintained. Alicante is easily reached by motorway from the major cities in Spain. Valencia is about a 2-hour drive up the coast, with Barcelona another 3 hours on from there. Madrid is 265 miles away, and it is an interesting drive through the central and eastern Spanish countryside.
Rail links to the main cities are also good, with high-speed trains operating daily between Alicante and Madrid or Barcelona. The fastest trains take about 4 hours from Madrid, and there are 12 trains a day. It is also possible to travel by train from Alicante to Montpellier in France.
Bus is another travel optionto Alicante, and both Eurolines and domestic bus services depart from the main bus station. There are a small number of ferries connecting Alicante with Ibiza, Palma, and even Oran in Algeria.
What to see
There is plenty to see and do in Alicante. For many tourists it is the perfect place to relax, enjoying the wonderful beaches and taking part in some of the water sports on offer. There are also opportunities to explore the history and culture of the region. The citys castle was originally built as a defence look out, under Moorish rule, and it offers stunning views of the coastline.
There are a number of other interesting old buildings, such as the Cathedral of San Nicolas de Bari, and the citys Town Hall. The old town is a great place to stroll through, with narrow alleyways and some good cafs and eateries. This is also the location of some of the best nightspots.
Alicante has a number of good museums with the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, and the Museum of Modern Art, among the best.
Day trips
The most popular day trip here is to take a boat trip to Isla de Tabarca, once a hideaway for pirate ships. Today it offers beautiful scenery and some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling in the region.
Activities and leisure
With its mild climate, Alicante offers plenty of different sporting options. A range of water sports are available from the main beaches, and tennis, golf, football and horse back riding are also popular.
The city has an excellent nightlife scene with numerous bars and clubs, as well as some good restaurants and an interesting events calendar.

Alicante is a busy tourist resort, so visitors should take care with their belongings at all times, as there is a possibility of pickpockets operating in some of the busiest areas.
