Be Safe in Alicante
Alicante is generally a safe place to visit, but there are a few things for tourists to take note of. Bag snatching and pick pocketing can be a problem in the summer season, and visitors should also take particular care in the hot sun at this time of year.
Safety
The area along the Costa Blanca is very popular with tourists, and as a result there is a possibility of pickpockets and bag snatchers operating, especially in the busiest tourist areas. Tourists should take particular care with their belongings, and only carry with you what you really need. One method occasionally used here is for a car or motorbike to drive close to you, while you’re walking, grab your bag and speed off.
The main bus station is an area where pickpockets are known to operate, so make sure you keep your valuables close by when you are here.
At night, it is best to avoid any dark alleyways or quiet side roads, especially if you are walking alone, and have had a few drinks. It is much safer, and easier to get a taxi home at night.
If you have a car, don’t leave any valuables in the car and take particular care of your belongings when you are the beach. It is not advisable to spend the night on the beach or go to the beach at night after you have been drinking.

Health
There are few health risks specific to travel in Alicante. Tap water is considered safe to drink, but most tourists choose to drink bottled water when on a short visit. The beaches are generally clean and the sea fine for swimming, but probably the biggest health problem for tourists here is from over exposure to the sun. The sun can be especially strong between midday and 15:00 and it is important to make sure you wear plenty of good sun protection cream. Remember that you also need to wear sunscreen when swimming and re-apply as appropriate. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Sunburn or sunstroke are very uncomfortable and without taking care could severely limit your enjoyment on holiday.
Visitors from the UK in possession of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can receive free medical treatment.
