Bucharest Leisure

Bucharest has an international reputation in some sports, having produced tennis star Ilie Nastase and 2002 champion boxer Leonard Dorin Doroftei, the first world-title holder from the country. In 1999, Romania won the European basketball championship. But for its citizens, Bucharest’s heart lies with the world’s favourite game, football.

Football

Football is the most-followed sport in Bucharest, and the city has five teams, three of which have had major seasons, run in various European cups and are seen as formidable opponents on the circuit. Most recently, FC Rapid was a quarter-finalist in the 2005 to 2006 season of the UEFA Cup. Visitors are welcome to attend live games; however, local support is high and getting a ticket may prove difficult.

Skiing

The bordering Carpathian mountain range provides good skiing for Bucharest residents and visitors alike, with a season that runs from November to March. Most resorts offer picturesque trails lined by trees, which are ideal for beginners and intermediates. A couple of the more popular resorts include Poiana Brasov and Sinaia.
