Bucharest Transport

Getting around Bucharest is relatively easy and straightforward, and visitors should find the city’s transit infrastructure simple to negotiate. The Metro is perhaps the best option for getting around in terms of cost and destinations covered. The bus, trolley and tram services are also useful, although taxis may provide an easier option.

By Metro

The best way to get around the city centre is via the Metro, which runs from 05:00 to 23:30. The service is very reliable and operates four lines (M1, M2, M3 and M4) that stop at 45 stations throughout the city. Tickets are sold in two types: two-journey and 10-journey packs. Be mindful to hold on to your ticket during your journey, as Metro police spot-check passengers and will fine people for not having a ticket. Stations are marked by white signs with a blue ‘M’.

By bus

Buses, trams and trolley buses operate under one transit system, running from 05:00 until midnight. Tickets are transferable for all three modes of transport, excluding the express buses, which mainly serve destinations beyond Bucharest. Single-ride tickets are available, and passes are offered to cover rides within one day, one week, 15 days or one month. Note that these transport options are often crowded, and pick-pocketing is a problem on these services during peak hours.

Taxis

Most hotels have a taxi rank outside, and hailing a taxi from the street is fairly easy. You can also arrange to for a pick up by phone. It is advisable to stick to yellow taxis that charge by the meter and have their rates prominently displayed. If using a taxi to or from the airport, you should note that yellow taxis do not charge additional fees for luggage.

Reputable companies include Alfa Taxi, Cristaxi and Meridian. Taxis may charge extra for night-time travel. Generally, passengers round up the metered taxi fare to give a tip, and taxi drivers usually do not give back change.

You can also travel through Bucharest by maxi-taxis, which are like buses that operate along the main thoroughfares likely to be roamed by tourists and nightlife-seekers. The maxi-taxis can be found along the stretch from Piata Romana to Piata Unirii and from the Opera Romana to bulevardul Carol I, passing at 10-minute intervals from 06:00 to 21:00. Flag them down by waiving your hand.

Tourist services

Tourist bus services travelling between the most popular sights in central Bucharest are available to tourists. Sightseers can get on and off the buses at their whim in order to spend time exploring key areas. Purchase a ticket at the beginning of the day and ride as many times as you like.

From the airport

Passengers arriving at the airport requiring ground transportation can choose between buses, minibuses and taxis. Car hire companies are also on hand, although you can also book a vehicle online to guarantee yourself a suitable vehicle upon arrival and save yourself the hassle at the airport.
