Getting to Vilamoura
Vilamoura is situated on the south coast of Portugal and has good connections by air and road. It is possible to reach Vilamoura by train and buses via nearby towns. In reality, though, the vast majority of people fly to Faro and then drive to the resort itself.
By car
Vilamoura is 15 miles from Faro and is easily reached by the N125 road via Alem. From Lisbon, Vilamoura is around three hours away by car and just 160 miles. Take the E01 and connect to the A22 and N125 for Vilamoura.
From Porto in the west of Portugal, take the IP1/E01 for Lisbon and then continue on this road to connect to the A22 and N125 for Vilamoura. The distance is 350 miles and no more than six hours in the car.
The most popular road route to the Algarve from Spain is via Seville in southern Spain. The journey takes around 2 hours and follows good motorways nearly all of the way. From Seville, take the A49/E1 which connects to the IP1 in Portugal to take you to Faro
By rail
There are no trains which run directly into Vilamoura, but it is possible to travel into nearby Loule, which is just over seven miles from Vilamoura. From Lisbon Entrecampos station there are four trains a day and the journey takes between 2 hours 40 minutes and 3 hours 30 minutes depending on the particular train.
By bus
There is a reasonable local bus service from Vilamoura to some of the nearby towns and attractions but the service is not very reliable.
If you have arrived at the airport and want to continue your journey by bus, you will find that because Vilamoura is a purpose built tourist resort, it is not on the regular bus routes. The best option is to take a bus to a nearby town, such as Albufeira, and connect from there by local bus or taxi to Vilamoura.
By air
Vilamoura is served by Faro airport, a short 30 minute drive away. Faro connects with many European destinations such as the UK, Holland, Italy and Germany. There are over 14 flights a day from the UK and up to 20 UK airports offering services to Faro throughout the high season.
If you have accommodation booked, either through a tour company or independently, you will find that almost every hotel here will provide a transfer from the airport to Vilamoura. The journey is short and the system is pretty efficient. There are also plenty of taxis available here to take you to the resort.
By ferry
It is not possible to reach Vilamoura by ferry, although many people who own private yachts and boats do moor in the marina. Short boat cruises for fishing and touring the coastline are popular and a fun way to spend a day.
Taxis
There are plenty of taxis around Vilamoura to take you where you want to go. Taxis here are not metered so you should establish the cost of the journey beforehand. Your hotel will be able to assist you in pre-booking a taxi for a particular trip, but in the busy areas around the marina they are easy to find.
