Porto Weather

Porto is situated just north of a coastal Mediterranean climate zone that covers the majority of central and southern Portugal. Because of this, the city experiences much of the same weather patterns as the south coast including warm dry summers and mild rainy winters. The city does however suffer from intermittent cool and rainy periods, which often interrupt a glorious summer. 

Summer

Summers in Porto are usually very sunny, with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 24°C, but are known to rise to as high as 38°C during occasional heat waves. These heat waves can last for up to 10 days and they can be unbearably hot, but it is a very dry heat, as humidity levels remain very low.

Forest fires are common during these periods and add smoke and ash to the air, making breathing difficult for those with asthma. In contrast to these hot dry heat waves, there are occasional rainy periods throughout the summer. They will usually last a few days and are characterised by heavy showers, a strong wind and cool temperatures.

Winter

Winter temperatures range between 5°C and 14°C during the day and can drop below 0°C at night. The weather is often wet and windy for long periods of time, although long-lasting sunny periods also occur.

Spring and autumn
Spring and autumn are very stable seasons. Heat waves are extremely rare and although rain is common in autumn, it is almost unheard of in spring. These seasons are good times to visit the city, as tourist levels are lower than they are over the peak summer months, but temperatures are still pleasant and the sun always shines in spring.
