Porto Leisure

Much of the city’s sport is focused around football, both the watching and playing of the game. Cricket is also a favourite pastime in the city, with many people enjoying a game at the weekend. Formula One is also very popular, especially during the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Football

As is the case in most Portuguese cities, football is the most important sport in the city. Champion sides FC Porto and Boavista FC are both from Porto and there are two major grounds in the city: the Estádio do Dragão and the Estádio do Bessa. FC Porto have won the UEFA Champions League twice, once in 1987 and again in 2004.

Cricket

The city of Porto houses the only cricket club in the north of Portugal. The Oporto Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club is regarded as being the oldest European cricket club outside of the UK. For over 100 years, an annual competition is held between the Oporto Club and the Casuals Club of Lisbon. Local teams often play against touring teams, and have annual matches against England. If you happen to be in Porto during the height of the cricket season, it is well worth trying to catch a match.

Formula One

In 1958 and 1960, the streets of Porto hosted the Formula One Portuguese Grand Prix. Ever since then, locals from Porto have been hooked on Formula One and many of their dreams were answered, when in 2005, a re-enactment took place of these historical races.

Shopping

For those who like to indulge themselves, Porto is home to some excellent shops including some very colourful and traditional local markets. You will be able to buy wonderful souvenirs, traditional Portuguese dress, designer outfits and many accessories. The markets offer a truly unique Portuguese experience and can be followed by a cup of coffee and an opportunity to relax at one of the numerous riverside cafés in the Barredo quarter.
