Safety

Porto is a relatively safe city, but as with all tourist hotspots, petty criminals thrive here. The main crime which concerns tourists in Porto is petty theft. You should always keep hold of your belongings and try to avoid travelling anywhere with large amounts of cash. Never flash valuables around, as this acts as a magnet for most criminals.

Thieves commonly try and distract people by having loud arguments, asking for directions, pretending to dance with their victim or by spilling something on their victim’s clothing. While the victim is distracted, they will help themselves to wallets, jewellery, bags and anything else they can get their hands on.

Violent crime is very rare in Porto therefore using your common sense and staying alert when out touring the city should prevent any involvement in serious strife.

Local police are very helpful and most have a grasp of English. You should contact them immediately if you have been a victim of a crime.

Porto’s numerous pharmacies offer basic drugs and advice to all tourists, and are very easy to find. If you need immediate assistance, speak to your hotel and they will contact the emergency services for you.
