Lisbon is a prime location for sport and leisure opportunities. The city itself has several beautiful parks in which to relax and while away the hours. The sports-minded may wish to opt for some international-level sports events such as matches by the city’s famed football clubs, Benfica and Sporting.
Surrounding area
The surrounding coastal regions near Lisbon such as Cascais and Estoril also offer wonderful opportunities for sunny seaside relaxation as well as myriad choices for water sports. Golfers should look into the several fantastic and picturesque courses along the river, and the nearby Sintra Mountains provide ideal terrain for mountain biking and horseback riding.
Running
For serious runners planning a trip here, Lisbon hosts two half-marathons each year, in March and September, the events are world-famous, drawing entries and spectators from around the world.
The March race begins in the south part of the city, near the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge, and weaves its way alongside the River Tagus, finishing in Belém, at the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. The September race follows the same course, but with the start and finish being reversed. Even for spectators and casual visitors, the events mark a great time to be in the city, as the capital is alive with activity.
