Be Safe in Lisbon
Lisbon is a major metropolis, and as with any city of its size, it comes with its fair share of criminals and undesirables. Following some basic courses of action can ensure that you don’t fall victim to them, enabling you to enjoy a trouble-free holiday.
Safety
The biggest threat to the cash and valuables of visitors to Lisbon are pickpockets. Pick-pocketing is a major problem in crowded areas as well as on certain public transportation routes including metro, bus and tram lines. In fact, the most notorious pick-pocketing site is on Tram 28, a public line that works its way through all the major tourist areas of the city.
Also, be aware of your belongings when enjoying outdoor festivities and celebrations. It is good practice to keep your wallet in your front pocket and any bags secured tightly to your body. Be mindful not to keep any valuables in your rental car when you park it, taking any items of value with you or stowing them in the boot or your hotel safe.
While Lisbon is generally a safe place in terms of violent crime, gang-related nightclub violence has increased in recent years, as have muggings. Be careful and stay aware of your surrounding, especially when at ATMs in the city centre.
