Travel to Funchal
Funchal is the capital city of the archipelago of Madeira, an island that sits approximately 350 miles off the coast of Morocco. Madeira has been under Portuguese jurisdiction since the mid-17th century. The island has a rugged, volcanic landscape, lush forests, old-world architecture and churches, spectacular beaches and a wide range of resorts and accommodation.
Transportation to Funchal
Madeira Funchal Airport is only a few miles from the city centre. It is a one-terminal facility that was once infamous for its startlingly short runway. Recent expansion has significantly improved the airport, which offers modern facilities and plenty of room to accommodate its annual throughput of passengers.
Buses ply the roads of Madeira and connect the city of Funchal to the airport as well as to other parts of the island. There is currently no rail service, with past railways now out of use or being converted to cable cars. Ferries connect Madeira to Portugal, though this service does not transport vehicles.
What to see
Santa Maria is the oldest street in the city. It is a cobblestone throughway with a great deal of traditional architecture and markets. A cable car from this street takes visitors up to the top of Monte, where the church of Our Lady of the Mount sits, along with picturesque palaces and the tomb of Austria's Charles I. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden displays local species of plants, flowers and Japanese gardens.
Daytrips
The Funchal Ecological Park offers an excellent daytrip opportunity. It is located halfway between Monte and Pioso and offers a great deal of natural beauty and attractions. This area is home to the two highest points on the island, and the views of Funchal that are afforded here are well worth the trip.
There are several volcanic caves and a landscape that is well worth exploring. A simple drive through the countryside is also worthwhile on roads that wind through the hillsides and the green, tropical landscape. The region is famous for its wine-making and daytrips to local wineries are also enjoyable.
Activities and leisure
Walks in Santa Maria are relaxing and afford opportunities to shop at the local markets to check out the cuisine. There are endless beach activities that visitors can participate in, and the waters are warm year-round. Wine tasting and seasonal festivals also offer extra incentives to visit during certain times of the year.
Safety issues
While Funchal is overall a very safe holiday destination, visitors are advised to take extra care to guard their belongings from pickpockets. Driving in the hill country poses some risk, as narrow roads and hairpin turns are frequently encountered. Anyone who participates in water sports is at an increased risk of injury, and we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance prior to arrival in Funchal to protect yourself, your family and your belongings.
