Be Safe in Faro

If you plan on hiring a car while in Faro, you should be aware that Portugal has one of the highest road accident and death rates of the worlds popular tourist destinations. Considerable care and defensive driving are especially important throughout the Algarve.

Safety

Faro and the Algarve region have a crime rate that is lower than the European average. Crimes that do occur here involve theft from hotel rooms and cars. Although its not possible to guarantee a vacation free from such criminal incidents, it is possible to minimise the risk by following a few simple guidelines. Leave your valuables locked in a safe at your hotel or villa, don't carry around more cash than necessary and dont leave your baggage unattended. Make sure you keep your patio or balcony doors locked, your car windows closed and lock car doors when you are away from your vehicle.

There are two other situations that you should be aware of and avoid. These include street hawkers selling gold rings, chains and other jewellery, which are most likely fake; and offers to buy timeshares made by street agents. If you are bothered by either of these types of sellers, you should report the problem to the local tourist office, as these activities are illegal.

Health

Faro and the Algarve region pose no particular health risks and good medical care is available. There are many well-trained Portuguese doctors as well as South African and some British doctors. The Clinica Europa is excellent, and appointments are readily available. Excellent dental care is available here as well.

For citizens of the EU, medical treatment in public hospitals is available at no charge. Be advised however that treatment in public hospital emergency rooms has been reported to be unsatisfactory by some patients.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance can cover a number of unexpected occurrences that might otherwise cause you financial hardship. It can provide peace of mind, knowing that you are covered should your trip be cancelled or if there is a need for emergency evacuation while abroad. The additional travel cover could prove to be well worth the investment.
