The Azores is a very safe, year-round holiday destination, where numerous visitors enjoy hassle-free holidays. The islands are not completely immune to pests and dangers however, and incidences of pick-pocketing, for example, have grown in recent years.

While the main roads are in fairly good condition, there are many blind spots, switchbacks and general hard driving conditions on many of the mountain and coastal tracks, and you wouldn’t want to be without travel insurance if you were involved in an accident. Losing your wallet and passport or having an accident on holiday is bad enough, although a lot worse when you have no means of back-up. Although EU citizens can receive free emergency healthcare while in the Azores, having medical cover included on your travel insurance policy is recommended.
