Azores Transport
Although many of the islands are small, hiring a car is the best way to fully explore these islands, as public transport is simply too unreliable and slow. Travelling between the main towns on São Miguel can be done by bus, although taxis offer a much faster option. The best way to get between the islands is without doubt by plane, while some ferry services are available between the busier islands.
By air
The fastest way to get about the various islands of the Azores is by plane. All nine islands have airports, three of which also operate international flights. The local airline SATA Air Azores is the sole provider of air travel between the islands, with numerous flights hopping between the various islands and a turn around time of just 20 minutes. Planes in operation are twin-propeller, 64-seater ATPs.

Bus
Travelling around the islands by bus can be an uncomfortable and unforgettable experience, as services are slow and unreliable, with the possible exception of the services offered on São Miguel. Services here run between the main towns three or four times daily and are reasonably priced. If you need speed, reliability and comfort, hire a car or take a taxi.
By car
The best way to get about the larger islands of the Azores is to hire a car and these can be hired on all of the islands. The Portuguese drive on the right and special care should be taken when negotiating mountain and coastal roads, although main roads are fairly good.
Taxis
The second most recommended way to get about the islands is by taxi. Fares are obviously a lot more than taking the bus, but you will get to where you want to go, when you want to and most drivers also speak a modicum of English. Taxis are generally in good condition and are cheap when compared with the likes of the UK.
By ferry
With domestic air travel between the islands reasonably cheap and fast, there is no real need to try and save money by taking a ferry, although it is a nice experience and a refreshing change from flying. Services are quite limited, with regular ferries travelling between Flores and Corvo, São Miguel and Santa Maria, and between Faial, Pico and São Jorge.
From the airport
Transport options from Ponta Delgada Joao Paulo II Airport to the town of Ponta Delgada are good and include shuttle buses, public bus and taxis. Buses run every hour and many larger hotels provide shuttles and taxis on a 24 hour basis. The road to town is also good and an easy drive for those who prefer to hire a car. Transport options are also available from the airports on Faial and Terceira.
