Azores Restaurants

Most towns and resorts of the Azores’ many islands offer plenty of cafés and restaurants, where traditional Azorean fare and international cuisines can be sampled. Prices are fairly reasonable when compared with mainland Europe and fresh fish and local ingredients can be enjoyed year-round owing to the islands’ temperate climate.

Local cuisine

Most dishes revolve around meats and fish in the Azores, with local beef, pork and chicken all readily available as well as a variety of delicious local fish – only a few dishes are very spicy. Vegetarians need not worry however, as salads and vegetarian dishes are becoming more widespread, while Azorean bread and cheese are ubiquitous and of excellent quality.

Where to eat

Cafés and restaurants are scattered far and wide in the Azores, although the majority can be found at the beaches, resorts, towns and villages of São Miguel, São Jorge and Santa Maria. Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel, has the best choice of restaurants of the archipelago, with its charming streets and alleys and 17th century Portuguese buildings, while most towns have supermarkets for those in self-catering accommodation.
