Travel to Oslo
Having recently celebrated its 1,000-year anniversary in 2000, Oslo has shaped itself into one of the hottest capital cities in Europe. The incredible natural beauty of the waterfront, fjords and forests seems to infuse itself in the urban landscape. Although its not one of the cheaper cities in Europe, you wont be disappointed.
Transportation to Oslo
One of Scandinavias largest air hubs, Oslo International Airport handles more than 14 million passengers a year from over 60 international destinations around the world. Although flying is an easy option, many visitors choose to arrive by train, bus or ferry.
It is fairly easy to drive to Oslo. Ferries are the fastest way to reach the city by car, as most overland routes pass through Sweden. Once in Oslo, the city can be navigated on foot or via the efficient public transportation network.

What to see
Oslo is one of the hottest cultural cities in Scandinavia, particularly for young artists. There are some great art museums here as well as the interesting Folk Museum and the 700-year-old Akershus Castle. Skiing has a 1,000 year history in Norway, so dont miss the Holmenkollen ski complex, with its ski museum, famous ski jump and amazing views from the top of the tower.
Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of Oslo is its restaurant and bar scene. There are some amazing places to eat, drink and listen to live music in this city and the locals are a big part of it. The restored waterfront area of Aker Brygge is the place to go for a dizzying selection of cafs, bars and shops.
Daytrips
Norway is one of the most stunning countries in northern Europe and offers plenty of great sightseeing outside of Oslo. From deep forests to electric blue fjords, nature rules the roost once you get out of the city. There are also a handful of amazing islands just off the coast of Oslo that are worth a day's exploration.
Activities and leisure
You are never far from nature when youre in Oslo. Just minutes outside the city centre you come to the amazing Oslomarka, a massive recreational forest area used by the locals year-round. People here love to get out into nature. In summer, hiking and lounging at the beach are popular, while in winter, its all about skiing.
Safety issues
Oslo is one of the safest cities in Europe and shouldnt present any major concerns for visitors. However, during the busy summer months, the number of tourists greatly increases, offering an opportunity for the citys pickpockets and petty thieves to ply their trade. It is strongly suggested that you buy some travel insurance before your trip to ensure that any mishaps dont ruin your holiday.
