A wide range of hotels are available in Oslo, but be prepared to pay dearly for your accommodation, as this city is one of the most expensive in Europe. Nearly every room in Oslo’s 60 odd hotels comes with a generous Norwegian breakfast buffet included in the rate and most of the accommodation establishments are in the city centre.

Even if the prices put you off, there is still hope. Oslo makes much of its hotel revenue from the many business travellers who come here. During the peak of summer, the business travellers disappear, so many hotels offer discounts during this period, especially in July. Hotels also sometimes slash their rates on weekends, so be sure to ask your hotel about any potential discounts.

Where to stay

Most of the lodgings in Oslo are centrally located within a short walk from Karl Johans Gate, the city’s main street. Many hotels can also be found between the Royal Palace and Oslo Station, with some of the newer and nicer establishments situated nearer the station. Any of the centrally located hotels are a good choice. You can easily walk to the city centre and most of the attractions, bars and cafés. To fully appreciate Oslo’s style, try and stay near the western edge of Karl Johans Gate, between the National Theatre and the Stortinget.

For a quieter stay, check out the elegant residential neighbourhoods of Frogner and Majorstuen, located behind the Royal Palace and within walking distance of the city centre. Many of these hotels will be less expensive than the ones situated right in the heart of the city. Those in search of truly budget lodgings can stay at one of the old-style hotels that offer rooms without private bathrooms. Most of them have a sink, with shared showers and toilets.

When to visit

The hardest months to find accommodation in Oslo are May, June, September and October, when most of the business conferences are held in the city. Believe it or not, July and August are the best months to find a good room at a decent price, even though this is Europe’s peak holiday season.

Summer, especially between mid-May and late-July, is the best time to visit. The weather is wonderful and you have the benefit of the endless days of midnight sun. All of Oslo’s attractions have longer opening hours at this time and the public transportation runs more frequently. Autumn and spring are also pleasant times to visit, while even winter has its charms. The shortened days produce a golden light from the sun which cannot be experienced farther south.
