Be Safe in Amsterdam
Travel in Holland is fairly safe. Travellers should however always exercise caution in empty streets at night and be aware of pickpockets, particularly in central Amsterdam and at Centraal Station.
Safety
If you're pedestrian, be aware of cyclists. They could be as dangerous as car drivers. And if you are driving a car, take care as well because there are double traffic lights, one for motor vehicles and one for bicycles, which can be a bit confusing, especially if you are not familiar with such traffic regulations.
You will be approached by touts in the street offering to sell you hard drugs, especially when walking through the red light district. A firm refusal will do - they will not pester you. The selling of drugs in the street is illegal and often dangerous; furthermore, the drugs sold to strangers are often fake. When they invite you to have a look at the goods, they can lure you into a narrow street and rob you.
There have been several incidents on trains from Schiphol Airport, where heavily weighed down passengers have been targeted by thieves.

Health
Travelling to the Netherlands does not pose any specific health risks and no vaccinations are required. Drinking tap water is safe. The standard of healthcare in the Netherlands is very high, but necessary health insurance provisions must be taken before travelling. A mutual agreement exists with other EU countries, which entitles EU nationals to free emergency medical treatment. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is necessary for this purpose. If you are from outside the EU, make sure you have sufficient travel insurance.
