Amsterdam Restaurants
As a port and a trading city with a true cosmopolitan spirit, Amsterdam has soaked up culinary influences from far and wide, and adapted them to its own local favour. More than 50 different national cuisines are served at its restaurants. Even better, many of these eateries cater to the strong Dutch insistence on getting the greatest value out of every euro.
Local cuisine
Typically Dutch are the snack bars, where most Dutch people enjoy the large French fries topped with mayonnaise called vlaamse frites or the famous croquets, called vleeskroketten. Also very Dutch are the pancake-restaurants, called pannenkoekhuizen. Originally, Dutch dishes are based on simple ingredients (boiled potatoes and vegetables), but nowadays, Dutch cuisine is largely influenced by the French. Be careful when asking for mayonnaise on your French fries – they will be absolutely smothered!

Where to eat
Around the centre, you will find a lot of restaurants targeted mainly to tourists, some of which, like Iguazu, are very good. However, for a true culinary experience, you mustn't be afraid to branch out. Neighbourhoods like Pijp and Jordaan are stuffed to the brim with restaurants and cafés. Pijp is a favourite among Amsterdam's large student fraternity, so expect to find a young, trendy crowd in the bars and restaurants here, such as The Duvel. Beddington also attracts its fair share of trendy, if slightly better-off, clientele.
