Be Safe In Turin

In the past, Turin has suffered from something of a bad reputation with regards to safety. However, in recent years, plenty has changed and the city has gone to great lengths to clear itself up.

Safety

By and large, Turin is now a pretty safe place for visitors and provided you follow a few basic warnings, it’s fairly unlikely that you will fall foul of miscreants. Certain areas of the city have been identified as being less safe and these include Murazzi along the Po River and Porta Palazzo. We don’t say that you should avoid these areas of the city altogether, but women are advised not to walk through them alone and anyone heading there after dark is advised to do so in company.

Gypsy children who beg persistently have blighted certain areas of the city for a long time and while to some extent this problem has been addressed, you may well still encounter them and are strongly advised not to give them money and to be quite forceful in your vocal refusal and body language when you respond to them. Other basic advice includes keeping your valuables well hidden or in the hotel safe and keeping wallets and purses in front pockets, or better still, in a concealed money belt, so as not to attract pickpockets. Wear handbag straps over the opposite shoulder to the hip on which it sits and wear backpacks with both straps.

Health

There’s very little to worry about with regards to getting sick in Turin, as the water is safe to drink, restaurant hygiene standards are high and communicable disease levels are average for a developed European city. However, visitors to Turin run as much risk of falling ill as they would back at home and hence having travel insurance with medical cover is advisable unless you are from an EU country with a reciprocal agreement with Italy, in which case you will get free treatment provided you are in possession of the relevant documentation (available from local government offices in your home country).
