Turin Transport
The city’s metro service is being built at the time of writing and is set to be one of the most efficient ways of crossing the city. Until its completion, visitors needing to get around can choose between buses and trams operated by Gruppo Torinese Trasporti or take taxis run by private companies. A hire car is, of course, an ideal way of getting around and provides the comfort and convenience that other modes of transport lack.
By Metro
An underground metro network is currently under construction; the first portion will run from Porta Nuova train station across the city centre via Porta Susa railway station and then head west to Collegno along Corso Francia. The service is likely to be completed by the end of 2006.
By tram
Gruppo Torinese Trasporti (GTT) provides tram services in Turin, with routes covering most of the city’s main destinations. For more details, call: +39 11 57641.
By bus
Gruppo Torinese Trasporti (GTT) provides bus services in the city, with some 20 different routes in operation. Payment can be made on the buses themselves or passengers can purchase tickets from newsstands and participating shops. The Torino Card is a good option, allowing holders to travel an unlimited number of times within a 48-hour period.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available in Turin and are identifiable by their exclusively white colour; they can be hailed from the roadside or booked by telephone. Pronto Taxi can be contacted on: +39 11 5737, while for Radio Taxi, call: +39 11 5730.
From the airport
From the airport, many visitors will find that their hotels provide free shuttles. For those that don’t, there are public bus services, trains and taxis. Alternatively, car hire companies are on hand at the airport for those visitors wishing to make their own way to their onward destination.
