Trieste Leisure
Trieste offers a wide range of sporting and leisure activities for all ages. This is surprising, as a large proportion of the population are middle-aged.
Team sports
Football is very popular in Trieste, as in many cities across the world, but for those who are not interested, volleyball, handball or hockey are also on offer, all of which have seen a sharp increase in popularity. Friendly games are played most evenings throughout the city and on its beaches, with visitors being more than welcome to join in.
Sailing
A world-famous boating race takes place in Trieste in October. Over 1,000 sailing boats race in La Barcolana every year around the Gulf of Trieste. It is a prestigious event, with participants vying for first place.
Solitary sports
Many people visiting Trieste choose to hop on a bicycle and cycle around the city and up into the hills, discovering the sights. Cycle tracks can be found throughout the city and this can be one of the best ways to enjoy the scenery and attractions on offer. You must be careful, as Italy’s roads have one of the highest death rates in Europe.
If you prefer to keep two feet firmly on the ground, jogging and hiking are other popular pastimes. The hills and steep slopes offer testing hikes and cycle paths – steep enough to get the blood pumping. There are many interesting caves to explore in the hills, many of which are not accessible by car.
