Trieste Transport
Surprisingly, Trieste does not have a metro service. This could be due to its hilly terrain. Train services are limited to longer national and international journeys. Luckily, the public bus system is exceptionally good in the city, with buses being a cheap and comfortable option, with a comprehensive network of destinations served. Walking around the city is another possible option, as many tourist attractions are located within easy walking distance from each other.
By bus
There is an extensive bus service covering the city by day and night. Six bus services run throughout the night, so you will never be stranded. The buses are excellent value for money and usually very reliable. Timetables can be found at all of the bus stops and tickets can be bought in newsagents, which are dotted around the city. Tickets must be bought in advance of boarding a bus. It is possible to buy multiple tickets at a discount.
By tram
The single-track funicular railway takes passengers to and from Piazza Oberdan to the Karst Plateau in Slovenia. Passports are required.
Taxis
Taxis are available throughout the city and can be hailed on the streets or booked in advance. While all taxis are run on a meter, they are still an expensive way to see the sights of Trieste.
Tourist services
It is possible to travel on a coach tour of Trieste. The tour includes a 30-minute stop at the hill of San Guisto. Tours run every day and depart from outside the train station.
From the airport
There is an airport shuttle bus which runs frequent services to and from the centre of Trieste. These run all day, seven days a week. It is also possible to take a public bus to the city centre. This is a cheaper service, but you will find that it takes longer as it does not follow a direct route. It will also be less comfortable than the shuttle service. Taxis can be found directly outside the terminal building. They are available 24 hours, although they are a more expensive option than taking the bus. Hire car facilities are available at the airport and the A4 will lead you directly into the centre of Trieste.
