Sicily Weather

Sicily is a place dictated by the seasonal swings of tourism, so the time of year you visit directly relates to the kind of experience you will have. Travelling during the peak summer season will be hot, crowded and expensive. During other times of the year, many hotels and restaurants are closed or only keep partial hours of operation. However, there are a few times of the year when the island is perfect to visit. You just have to get your timing right.

Summer

The summer season suffers from two major drawbacks. From the middle of June through to the middle of September, the island is teeming with visitors.  Then there is August;  by far the worst time to visit, as many Sicilians take the whole month off for vacation. A lot of the hotels, shops and restaurants are closed as the locals head to the islands, spas and beaches for some rest. So most of the country is either closed or packed solid. The summer is also the hottest time of year, especially in the interior of Sicily. Humidity is not too bad in general, although August sees the highest levels.

Winter

The weather in Sicily gets colder than you’d think, although it’s still rather mild compared to northern Europe. From late October to early April, most of the attractions reduce their opening hours and close for renovation. Many of the hotels and restaurants also shut down for a month or two during the winter as the beach and spa destinations empty out.

Shoulder seasons
The ideal time to visit Sicily is during the seasons of spring and fall. April to early June and September to October bring mild, pleasant temperatures and the crowds aren’t as chaotic. You can explore the ancient sites, beaches and islands in relative peace.
