Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and as such, there are myriad choices when it comes to lodging. The island has everything from old-style grand hotels and luxurious bed and breakfast inns to bland concrete rooms. The quality hotels tend to be in the major cities and resort areas of Palermo, Taormina, Agrigento and Siracusa. There are some truly amazing places to stay on Sicily, as many old villas with stunning views of the sea have been converted into modern hotels. Another recent trend has been the development of rustic countryside inns, which range from very basic to quite posh.

Where to stay

Where you stay greatly depends on what you want to see on this large island. There are some lovely places within a short distance of Sicily’s main archaeological sites, plenty of seaside resorts and lots of hotels within the larger cities.

Palermo has the most hotels to choose from. They range from budget to luxury, and Sicily’s largest city is a good base from which to explore the island. Taormina is perhaps the most popular area to stay and is home to Sicily’s best hotels. The medieval city of Taormina sits atop a hill overlooking the beach at Mazzaro. There are dozens of lodging options in both Taormina and Mazzaro. The one down side to this lovely area is that during the summer, the town turns into one big round-the-clock party, so finding a quiet room becomes a challenge.

Other popular areas to stay focus around Sicily’s wealth of gorgeous and mysterious archaeological sites. Syracuse, Agrigento and Selinunte all have ancient ruins that rival those anywhere in the world. The area around Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, is another interesting place to stay.

When to visit

Sicily’s main tourist season runs from April through September. Easter sees a big influx of Italians seeking refuge in the countryside, while March through May brings flocks of schoolchildren on educational fieldtrips. Naturally, June through September are the busiest months, as most of Europe goes on holiday, while August is best avoided, when the island is thrown into total chaos. If you must come at this time, base yourself in Palermo, which actually sees a drop in visitors due to the hot weather and the closing of bars.

For sightseers, it’s best to come in early spring and late autumn. The weather may be slightly cooler and rainier, but you won’t have to fight the crowds at the top attractions. The shoulder seasons are also great for the beach, but keep in mind that many coastal resorts close from October to April, so try to catch them just before of after they close.
