Travel to San Marino

The capital of the petite republic of San Marino is a famous stop on the Formula One circuit. San Marino is also renowned for its outstanding architectural heritage, attractive beaches and amiable atmosphere. It is a unique holiday destination with much to offer visitors.

Transportation to San Marino

Many major carriers land at Rimini-San Marino International Airport. Shuttle services into the city are frequent and reliable. The Italian rail network is an efficient means of getting here from busier centres such as Florence and Venice, which offer international airports. The republic can be reached by motorway A14 exiting at Rimini sud (south Rimini) and then taking the state road SS San Marino (about 22 kms from the motorway exit).

What to see

Most visitors to San Marino choose to explore the ancient fortresses and battlements located on the top of Mount Titano, which overlooks the city. There are three main towers: La Rocca (First Tower), the Cesta (Second Tower) and the Montale (Third Tower).

La Rocca, dating from the 11th century, was carved directly out of the stone of the mountain and boasts a glorious bell tower. The 13th century Cesta is the highest of the three towers and contains the San Marino Museum of Antique Weapons. The Montale is also from the 13th century.

There are also plenty of churches worth seeing in San Marino, including the Basilica del Santo, containing the remains and artefacts of the patron saint of the republic. The bell tower dates back to the 7th century, while the main building was constructed in the 19th century. The quaint churches of Chiesa di San Francesco and San Pietro are also nearby.

Day trips

There is much to see and do in the area outside the republic. The route to the beautiful Italian resort of Rimini offers an enjoyable drive through spectacular coastal scenery. Rimini itself is a crowded, energetic beach resort town. En route, be sure to stop at the excellent Museo di Auto dEpoca, with its extensive collection of rare automobiles. Alternatively, hikers will enjoy the nearby Appennines.

Activities and leisure

San Marino has more than its share of luxury accommodation and dozens of restaurants with lavish menus. There are many nightlife options, from quiet cafs and bars to exciting clubs, pubs and discos.

Safety issues

When travelling to an unfamiliar environment, remain alert for potential hazards. Holidaymakers are more susceptible to pickpocketing, theft or loss of personal effects. Outdoor activities and driving can place you at greater risk of having an accident. Language barriers and strange routines can also result in missed travel arrangements or problematic bookings. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family when visiting San Marino and outlying areas.
