Travelling To San Marino

San Marino is situated 14 miles inland from Rimini, near the southeastern border of the Italian region of Emlia-Romagna and 78 miles from Bologna. It is directly accessible by road and can also be reached by rail, air and ferry via nearby Rimini.

By car

There are a number of major Italian cities within easy reach of San Marino by car. From Rimini, exit the A14 autostrada at the Rimini south exit and from there the San Marino highway connects to San Marino, 15 miles away. The A14 continues to Ancona in the south and Bologna in the north. From Florence, take the A1 (del sole) motorway and connect to the A14 near Bologna.

Cars are not allowed in the walled area of the city, so the best option is to leave your car in the nearby Borgo Maggiore and take the cable car (funivia) up to the ancient city.

By rail

There are no train services into San Marino, but Rimini connects to all major cities in Italy, usually via Bologna. There are a number of different categories of train service in Italy, with Eurostar and Intercity trains being the most comfortable, while Espresso trains are a cheaper option. The Eurostar Italia takes about 1 hour from Bologna to Rimini and around 3 hours from Milan to Rimini. Services from Rome to Rimini often require a change of trains at Bologna.

By bus

There are around nine buses per day from Rimini to San Marino (this can vary according to the season), with a journey time of around 45 minutes, and a daily service to Urbino. Buses leave from Piazzale Calcigni in San Marino. The number 17 bus leaves from outside the train station in Rimini.

By air

The nearest airport to San Marino is at Rimini, 17 miles away, although Bologna Airport (78 miles) is also an option. Riminis Federico Fellini Airport has connections to many European cities including: Amsterdam, London, Munich, Rome, Moscow and Zurich. Flying time to London is around 2 hours 30 minutes.

Facilities at the airport include a duty-free shop, bank, a number of food and beverage outlets, and a self-service restaurant.

By ferry

San Marino is located inland, but it is possible to travel by ferry to Rimini from a few destinations in Italy and Croatia, with services operated by Venezia lines including routes that service Venice in Italy and Pula and Porec in Croatia. Timetables vary according to the season and it is recommended you book in advance.

Taxis

Taxis can be easily hired from Rimini Airport or Rimini town itself, but the fare is moderately expensive. Your hotel should also be able to assist you in making arrangements for transport to San Marino from Rimini. Taxis can be hired to tour San Marinos villages and sights, and again, your hotel will be able to help you make arrangements.
