Rome decided to celebrate the new millennium by sprucing up the city including many of its hotels. However, the city is as popular as ever with tourists, which has made it even harder than before to find a room on short notice. There are plenty of great lodging choices in Rome, but don’t even think about coming to this city without hotel reservations.

Where to stay

Rome’s luxury hotels are some of the finest in Europe, but if you’re on a budget, there are plenty of pensions which serve the need for moderately-priced rooms. The Italian government sets the prices of all its hotels and charges a VAT tax of up to 13 per cent on top of that.

If you want to immerse yourself in the spirit of Rome, find a room near Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. You’ll be within walking distance of the Vatican, classical ruins and tons of bars and cafés. The Stazione Termini is another good location for cheaper hotels; it’s not the most romantic part of town, but it’s the most convenient for transportation options.

If you want to go upscale, then look for something around via Vento, Piazza Barberini or Piazza del Popolo. The shopping and dining around here is the best in town, and you’ll pay appropriately for your lodging.     

When to visit

The peak tourist season kicks off just before Easter, when the highest number of visitors flood the city, and continues straight through October. July and August are the worst months to visit Rome. It’s hot, muggy and absolutely packed with tourists. You’ll wait in long lines to see every attraction and will have little intimacy with this great city. Winter is the least crowded time of the year, but the weather is also at its worst. Visit during spring or autumn if you can, when the weather is ideal, the crowds tolerable and you might even find a moment of quiet isolation beneath one of Michelangelo’s masterpieces.
