Palermo Health And Safety

Palermo is a relatively safe place to visit, but care should be taken, particularly when driving on some of the busy streets.

Health

There are no obvious health risks for tourists visiting Palermo, but as with any hot climate, visitors should take care to avoid sunburn, especially in the summer months. It is easy to overlook this while sightseeing in the city, but it is well worth wearing a hat and sunscreen. Overdoing it in the sun can seriously diminish the enjoyment of your holiday.

Safety

Sicily has a well known history of the Mafia, but in reality, this is not something that any tourist to Palermo will come into contact with. The major safety concerns for visitors are similar to those you would find in many popular tourist destinations. Although street crime is rare in Palermo, do keep your belongings close by when visiting busy public places, as pickpockets and bag snatchers may be operating in the area. Traffic can be busy in the centre of the city and visitors should take the usual precautions from the odd reckless driver.

Travel insurance

Whatever precautions you take to prevent theft, loss or accident during your stay in Palermo, sometimes things happen that are unavoidable. Travelling with comprehensive travel insurance is a prerequisite to any trip, and should you be unfortunate, it will ensure that you arent left short and can help to minimise any negative impacts on your holiday.

Visitors who are citizens of the EU can get free medical treatment in Palermo with the necessary documentation, while all other visitors should ensure they have comprehensive health insurance to cover the costs of any medical treatment during their stay.
